Consultant Neurologist, Dr Olusola Talabi, has said a lower body mass index can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Talabi, in an interview with our correspondent, said an increase in body mass was associated with insulin resistance, which may lead to type 2 diabetes.

“BMI is a measure of the body mass. Those who are overweight tend to have insulin resistance. Insulin is a key factor in the utilisation of the body glucose and that is the major issue in Diabetes Miletus.

“However, it must be pointed out that there are some people who are genetically overweight and there is nothing anyone can do about that. Some cases of obesity could be due to poor diet and  some drugs. People who are obese or overweight should engage in subtle exercises to get themselves back to shape. Fruits and vegetable consumption can also help them in maintaining a normal body mass index. They should also take a lot of water,” Talabi said.

According to a study published in the Public Library of Science, a lower body mass index is consistently associated with reduced type 2 diabetes risk among people with varied family history, genetic risk factors and weight.

As reported by sciencedaily.com, the researchers studied the association between BMI, diabetes, family history and genetic risk factors affecting type II diabetes. They used data on 287,394 unrelated individuals of British ancestry recruited to participate in the UK Biobank from 2006 to 2010 when between the ages of 40 and 69.

Their findings suggest that individuals can reduce their type II diabetes risk through weight loss.
