ONE Mr. Idemudia Obamwonyi, reportedly set the house he inherited from his late father ablaze over alleged refusal by the tenants to pay rent. Over 20 shops in the building located at Iwebo Lane behind Oba Market, Benin, were razed.

An eyewitness said Idemudia stubbornly stopped those who attempted to put out the fire, insisting that it was better for him to raze the house than allow tenants stay in it for free. It was gathered that he allowed shop owners in the building to close for the day before setting the house ablaze.

The eyewitness, who identified himself as Ifaluyi Obasogie, expressed shock over the incident, narrating that “people were holding him and he was saying ‘let the house burn, I don’t get any money from it’.”

A shop owner, who gave his name as Justice Aigbekhan, claimed they had paid their rent, but Idemudia kept asking for money, saying he wanted to perform his father’s burial. According to Aigbekhan, “if they are having family issues, they should go and solve it. It is not for them to put us in trouble.”

Another shop owner, Cynthia Obaseki, claimed she lost goods worth N5 million to the inferno, vowing that she will recover her money through the courts
