In this interview, Mercy told Dotun Olanibi how she has been coping in the industry, stardom, what she cherishes about herself, her second marriage and many more.
Why did you choose acting as a career?
I started acting because of passion. It’s something that I just like to do.
And now comes stardom, what does stardom mean to you?
When you have worked so hard and you become successful, that means you are blessed. It’s blessing from God. Although stardom has its own advantages and disadvantages but all the same, attaining stardom can only be made possible through hardwork and the hardwork being blessed by God.
So what are the other sides of stadorm?
Attaining stardom comes with a lot of challenges and responsibilities. One of the other sides of stardom has to do with the press. For example, the press sometimes write a lot of stuffs that are not true about you. This is because you are popular. This is not good at all.
What are the things that you used to do but you can no longer do because of your celebrity status?
Well, let me think deeply. I am a down to earth person. I do things the normal way I’m supposed to do them despite the status. Ok, i’m the kind of person that loves walking a distance to exercise my body but I can no longer do that now because if I do that, it will attract a lot of attention. Apart from that, some people will just come around and start demanding money from you. I mean these area boys.
Then on the part of the fans, some of them will want to take pictures with you whenever they see you, they don’t want to know your state of mind at that time. It could be annoying sometimes but one cant help it.
How do you combine your role as a wife and mother with your busy schedule as a movie maker?
It’s overwhelming I must confess to you. God has been helping me to balance it all up. It’s a very hard job but thank God I’m blessed with a very good husband. He gives me the push and the drive. He’s my driving force. Even if I’m down, he’s the one that is always urging me to keep moving. He is always encouraging me.
What are the attributes that attracted you to your husband before you married him?
He’s my number one fan. He’s a very understanding man. He’s caring and awesome. He doesn’t feel intimidated by any height I might have attained in my career.
You have been married for some years now, how have you been able to keep your marriage?
All thanks to my loving husband. He’s such a loving husband. He’s been my pillar of support. He’s been supporting my work, me and my children thereby making the marriage work. I keep telling people that it takes a very special and understanding man to marry an actress. It’s not easy to marry an actress at all.
Apart from being into movies, you are also into fashion, how do you cope with this other aspect of your business?
Yes, I am able to do my movie with my fashion because I am an hard working person. I make sure I give my best to everything that I do.
What part of your body do you love most?
That’s my face. I can’t help but fall in love with my face. Sometimes when I tell people my age, they go like “wow! You don’t look your age at all”. I thank God for blessing me with this face.
What do you cherish most about yourself?
I cherish the fact that I’m down to earth, hardworking and I’m a go getter.
