KATSINA: POLICE ARREST MENTALLY HANDICAPPED TEENAGER OVER WOMAN’S DEATH

The police in Katsina State have arrested an 18-year-old man, Saifulahi Iliya, over the alleged death of a sexagenarian, Punch Newspaper reports.

Iliya, of Zandam village, Jibia Local Government Area of the state, allegedly hit a 60-year-old woman, Gwan Gwanda, on the head with a pestle, which caused her to sustain serious injuries.

Gwanda was rushed to the General Hospital, Jibia, where she was pronounced dead on arrival by a medical doctor.

Iliya and the victim were neighbours.

Another neighbour, Babangida Lawal, reported the incident at the Jibia Police Station, leading to Iliya’s arrest.

Iliya was charged with culpable homicide under Section 188 of the Katsina State Penal Code Law, 2019.

The police prosecutor, ASP Sani Ado, told the Katsina Senior Magistrates’ Court on Friday that investigation revealed that Iliya was mentally handicapped and was currently on admission at the Psychiatric Hospital, Katsina.

Ado tendered the report he received from the hospital on Iliya’s mental health.

He asked the court to adjourn the case to a new date for mention because of the development.

The presiding magistrate, Hajiya Fadile Dikko, granted the request and adjourned the case till February 23, 2021 for mention.

She directed that Iliya be remanded in the psychiatric hospital until then.
