AKWA IBOM: SWEDISH-NIGERIAN JAILED FOUR YEARS FOR CHILD TRAFFICKING

A Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has sentenced a Swedish-Nigerian woman, Stephany Isaksson, to four years imprisonment for child trafficking in Akwa Ibom State, Punch Newspaper reports.

Isaksson, 43, was jailed on two counts of receiving an 18-month-old baby by means of fraud from one Uduak (currently at large), an offence which is contrary to section 13(2)(b) of trafficking in persons (prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2015 and for obtaining the possession of the baby, knowing that the baby will be subject to exploitation contrary to section 21 of the Trafficking in Persons (prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act.

A native of Mbiayon in Uruan LGA of Akwa Ibom State, Isaksson was said to have been arrested by the Swedish Embassy when she went to obtain papers for the child.

She (convict) was handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons in 2018 for prosecution.

Delivering the judgment on Charge Number, FHC/UY/108C/2019, Justice Fatun Riman, on Count one, sentenced the convict to a term of two years or a fine of 250,000.

The judge, on count two, sentenced Issaksson to a term of two years or a fine of 250,000.

The sentence will run concurrently.
