A 32-year-old man, David Shodola, who was suspected to be mentally ill, on Friday, threw Ipara town, Remo-North Local Government Area of Ogun State into confusion after allegedly beheading an 84-year-old resident, Alfred Opadipe.
According to Punch Newspaper, the ‘madman’ was, however, shot dead by men of the state police command after he reportedly resisted arrest.
Some residents were seen gathering at the scene to behold the gory incident.
An eyewitness, who spoke in the clip, revealed that the victim was killed by a “madman”.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Omotola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a terse statement in Abeokuta on Friday.
Odutola said the command received a distress call from an informant on the matter as policemen, led by the Isara Divisional Police Officer, CSP Bankole Eluyeru, were deployed in the scene.
She said, “The Divisional Police Officer Isara, CSP Bankole Eluyeru, made an attempt to arrest the suspect, but he used the machete on the DPO and his men. The police succeeded in neutralising the suspect and the weapon was recovered from him.”
Odutola, however, said there was no recount of the suspect being mentally ill from the intelligence the police gathered.
