EVERYTHING TO KNOW ABOUT CONTRACEPTIVE IMPLANT

A contraceptive implant also known as a “birth control implant” is a small flexible rod-like device (1.6 inches long) that is inserted into the inner area of the arm. Its release of hormone progestin into the bloodstream prevents pregnancy for three to five years.

Disadvantages of the birth control implant

Your ovary is prevented from releasing an egg and the mucus in your cervix also thickens. This makes it impossible for the sperm to reach an egg.

You may experience mood swings, acne, bleeding, headaches, sore breasts and changes in your menstruation after using the birth control. However, you may not have to opt for an implant that is why you have to make your medical history known to your doctor if it is right for you.

In other words, it is only you and your healthcare provider that would decide what’s best for you.

When to remove the contraceptive implant

The removal depends on you. But the implant works for three years and could last up to five years. It is your doctor that can help you remove it by making a small incision in your skin.

How can you get pregnant?

You will get pregnant as soon as you remove the implant. Which means you may ovulate within a few days and get pregnant. Even if your last intercourse was before that removal, the sperm could still be in your body and fertilize if ovulation occurs. You can opt for another form of birth control after removing the implant if you don’t want to get pregnant.
