FOR STEALING NEIGHBOUR’S BELT, MAN FLOGS SON TO DEATH IN OSOGBO
A 45-year-old mechanic, Sikiru Adebayo, has been arraigned by the police for allegedly flogging his son, Uthman, to death.
The defendant, who was accused of beating his son to death for stealing their neighbour’s belt, was arraigned before a magistrates’ court presided over by Mrs. Fatimoh Sodamade, on one count of murder.
The prosecutor, Mr. Duro Adekunle, told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 31 in the Abidogun Zone 7 area of Osogbo, Osun State.
He explained that the accused flogged his son to death for allegedly stealing a belt from his neighbour.
He said, “The offence contravened Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. 11, Laws of Osun, 2003.”
Adebayo’s plea was not taken.
However, the defence counsel, Mudashiru Balogun, said a legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions preferred a manslaughter charge against his client.
Mudashiru argued that the charge before the court was wrong because it read murder.
The magistrate, Mrs. Fatimoh Sodamade, ordered an amendment of the charge sheet to reflect manslaughter as instructed by the DPP.
She ruled that the accused be kept in police custody till the next adjourned date.,
