OSUN STATE HIGH COURT SENTENCE TWO ARMED ROBBERS TO DEATH BY HANGING
An Osun State High Court sitting in Iwo has sentenced two men to death by hanging for armed robbery.
According to a statement made available to our correspondent by the spokesman for the Osun State Ministry of Justice, Opeyemi Bello, the two convicts were sentenced to death by Justice Moshood Adeigbe on Monday.
The two convicts were arraigned on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and armed robbery, contrary to sections 6(b) and 1(1) and (2), (a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The court was told that a gang of four armed robbers had in May 2012 invaded the residence of one Mrs. Aladete at Asabi Okin, in the Iwo Local Government Area of Osun State.
The victim was said to have been beaten before her official vehicle was driven away.
The convicts were later arrested by the police when they were about to sell the stolen vehicle.
The two men were arraigned on May 21, 2014, but they pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecuting counsel, Mr. Bamidele Salawu, had called three witnesses and tendered exhibits which were admitted without any objection.
Counsel for the convicts, Mr. C.N.N. Okwusidi , prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.
“The judge, while delivering the judgment found them guilty on the two counts charge preferred against them and sentenced them to death by hanging,” the statement added.
