DUKE UDI DUMPS OSUN UNITED
… Set To Join Sunshine Stars
Former Nigeria midfielder Duke Udi on Monday resigned as National League outfit Osun United coach.
The PUNCH reported exclusively on Monday that Udi was set to ditch the Osogbo side to take over at struggling Premier League side Sunshine Stars.
Sunshine became managerless following the sudden resignation of former Super Eagles coach Austine Eguavoen from the Akure club.
One of our correspondents learnt that the Ondo State Football Agency concluded contract talks with Udi to take over the reins at Sunshine, who are currently battling for survival, on Sunday.
And former Eagles midfielder Udi, who might be unveiled in Akure this week, tendered his resignation from Osun United, with the fans and board left shocked by his action.
Spokesman for Osun United Tunde Shamsudeen confirmed that Udi resigned his appointment with the club on Monday afternoon.
“The Osun United management committee led by Jimoh Olayemi held an emergency meeting after receiving Udi’s resignation letter, wished him the very best in his future endeavours and will name a substantive head coach that will fill the vacuum created soon,” Shamsudeen said in a statement.
A source close to Sunshine told one of our correspondents that former Shooting Stars attacker Udi is expected to arrive in Akure to sign a contract with the Ondo State Government-owned side “any moment”.
The source said, “Udi is expected in Akure any moment. Though he has resigned from Osun United, he has not resumed here (Sunshine). Now that he has resigned from Osun United, that means arrangements with the ODSFA have been concluded.”
However, spokesman for Sunshine Chris Okunuwa neither confirmed nor denied Udi’s impending move to the club.
Okunuwa said, “If the coach (Udi) has been signed, the ODSFA would not do it in secret, the whole world will know.”
