Healthcare professionals and other experts concluded that sitting on the toilet should not be more than ten minutes, or else there would be health issues.
What could make you spend more time in the toilet? The common reason is the inability to defecate easily, probably due to constipation; then you need to change your diet.
Constipation is a health condition which you have fewer bowel movements. Your stool would definitely be difficult to pass; even if you eventually do, it may come out dry, and you would still feel that not all is out.
You should always drink enough water and consume more fiber. It will make your bowel movement easier and help prevent constipation. If you observe you have weakened pelvic muscles, rectal prolapse, or hemorrhoids, see a doctor. He or she would give you treatment according to your symptoms.
Here are the health risks of sitting on the toilet for too long:
1. Rectal prolapse
Rectal prolapse occurs when part of the rectum (the last part of the large intestine) comes out of the anus. This can happen to you after a bowel movement before it (rectum) moves back into the anal canal – a tube at the end of the rectum. If you’re above fifty years old, you’re prone to this. Other causes of rectal prolapse could be chronic diarrhea, spinal cord conditions, constipation, and cystic fibrosis.
2. Weakened pelvic muscles
Sitting on the toilet for too long can weaken your pelvic muscles, which help the uterus, intestines, and bladder. As soon as your pelvic muscles are no longer active, you will begin to notice certain symptoms such as leaking urine (when laughing, coughing, or sneezing), painful urination, leaking stool, and urgent urination. But with exercise, you can strengthen your pelvic muscles.
3. Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in your anus. This happens when you already sit for too long on the toilet seat, and also when there is too much pressure around the anus. The main symptoms of hemorrhoids are bleeding from the anus, anal itching, and lumps around the anus.
