LAGOS: CAREGIVER ARRESTED FOR DEFILEMENT, RAPE OF STUDENTS

A caregiver to people living with Down Syndrome; Kabiru Wasiu, was on Tuesday arraigned before the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja for allegedly defiling a teenager with the condition.

Wasiu was arraigned on three counts bordering on sexual assault by penetration, defilement of a child and rape before Justice Sybil Nwaka.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Inumidun Solarin, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in 2018 at the Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria Hotel at No. 43, Adegoke Street, Masha, Surulere, Lagos.

She said, “The defendant sexually assaulted the 17-year-old victim by inserting his private parts into her anus.”

She added that Wasiu, a caregiver and a teacher at the facility, also had unlawful sexual intercourse with a 31-year-old woman living with Down Syndrome without her consent.

Following the defendant’s plea, Justice Nwaka ordered that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility and adjourned the case till May 14 for trial.
