Man bags one-month jail term for assaulting policeman, 2 women in Osun

jailedA 22-year-old man, identified as Lekan Olagunju was on Thursday convicted and sentenced to one-month imprisonment for assaulting a policeman, Mr Alayande Muritala, one Mrs Florence James and her daughter, Miss Victoria James.
During the trial of the convict, the Police Prosecutor, Inspector Joshua Oladoye had informed the court that on January 5th, 2018, the convict around 1.30 pm while attempting to defend his boss during a fight assaulted Florence and her daughter.
He further explained that when Olagunju was to be arrested over the incident, he assaulted a policeman and damaged his boot and wristwatch worth N25,000, adding that cannabis sativa, popularly known as Indian Hemp was also found in his possession.
Oladoye maintained that the offence committed by the convict was contrary to Section 516 (A), 356, 70, 430, 249 (D) and punishable under Section 516, 351, 356 (D), 70, 430, 249 (D) Cap 34, Volume 11 Laws of Osun State, Nigeria, 2003.
The convict, who had earlier pleaded not guilty on the first day of arraignment changed his plea to guilty on 6-count charge levelled against him when the matter came up on Thursday.
But, his defence counsel, Barrister Najite Okobe told the court that his client had already spent more than a month in prison custody because he could not meet his bail condition, just as he implored the court to temper justice with mercy, saying that Olagunju was a first time offender.
Presiding Magistrate O.A. Ayilara subsequently convicted and sentenced him to one-month imprisonment, but he was released immediately, having completed his jail term while standing trial.
