BRAKE FAILURE:

Four dead, 10 injured in Ibadan Market

 

 

Four persons died while 10 were injured on the Moniya-Iseyin Road in Ibadan on Saturday when a truck, carrying sand, ran into a market after it had brake failure.

Five motorcycles and three tricycles were also badly destroyed in the accident.

Among the victims were a motorcycle operator, a woman, and an underage boy who was sent on an errand.

Most of the victims were traders at the meat market. It was learnt that the driver of the truck escaped the scene before he could be apprehended.

While most of the victims died on the spot, a woman died before she reached the hospital.

An eyewitness said the truck driver was struggling to control the vehicle but failed in his effort as it crushed the victims.

The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Motorcycle Section in Moniya Garage, Idris Oladoja, said the accident was avoidable but for the poor condition of the portion of the road.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Oyo State Command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, confirmed the incident, said two people were who confirmed dead, adding that their corpses had been deposited at the State Hospital’s mortuary, Ring Road, Ibadan.

He said the driver of the truck had been arrested and that the vehicle had been taken to the nearby police station.

He said, “Two victims confirmed dead. Their corpses have been deposited at the State Hospital mortuary, Ring Road, Ibadan for autopsy. The erring driver has been arrested and the accident vehicle recovered to the station for VIO inspection. Investigation is ongoing.”
